![]() Number of rides down in 2008Gatineau, January 5, 2009 - Operation Red Nose Outaouais 2008 ended New Year's Eve on which 159 volunteers responded to 185 rides. A little more than 1,800 rides were completed with 1,749 volunteers' participations between December 5th and the 31st. The average number of rides per night was 165 compared to about 200 since the past five years. "We had seen a similar decrease between 1998 and 1999, and it had not happened since then. We'll have to wait until next year to see if there's a dowward trend," explained Danielle Legault, spokesperson for Operation Red Nose Outaouais. However, the users' generosity was up. The average donation went from $17.76 to $18.77. The money will be redistributed by Loisir sport Outaouais, Operation Red Nose Outaouais’ sponsoring organization, through grants to young athletes and subsidies to sports clubs of the region. Operation Red Nose is a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving. Essentially, it is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. Even though the service is free, donations are welcomed and, in our region, go towards a sport fund administered by Loisir sport Outaouais, project sponsor of Operation Red Nose Outaouais.
